Melky Cabrera came through with a ninth inning homer to win the game on Tuesday, a day after grounding out to end the game with the bases loaded and the Yankees down by a run. This time Cabrera blasted a shot into the right field bleechers to give the Yankees a 3-1 win. It was his first home run in 117 at-bats. The last came on May 4, when Cabrera had surprised everyone with his early power by smacking six home runs to that point. Melky continues to anchor the center field position in the outfield and provide much needed offense at the bottom of the order.

Slumping Cabrera gets a day off: The Sports Xchange notes that Melky Cabrera, who has been slumping and has gone hitless in his last 12 at-bats against lefties, was not in the lineup Tuesday at Baltimore. Manager Joe Girardi said it was “just a day” off. “He’s played every day for us,” Girardi said. “He’s been struggling a little bit with his right-handed stroke.” Johnny Damon was in center against Orioles LHP Brian Burress, and Hideki Matsui was in left. Both homered.

In the midst of an injury plagued season with sluggers Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada sidelined for an indefinite period of time, Melky Cabrera contines to swing a hot bat and a smooth glove in the outfield. With Cabrera’s solid play, he has tightened his grip on the starting center field role. With all the early struggles of the New York Yankees early in the season, Melky Cabrera remains one of the lone bright spots on the team.

Almost one full month into the season, Melky Cabrera is currently the starting center fielder for the New York Yankees. He is batting a commendable .306 so far which is third best on the team with at least 30 at bats. He has 11 hits; 2 of which were home runs, and 5 RBI’s (runs batted in). So far Melky Cabrera is off to a admirable start, and with the yankees in the midst of a talent packed american league east division, he will need to continue to produce if the yankees want to win the division in the never ending quest to win the world series.
